Summer of Sewing

This is my last summer living in Brooklyn, and I want to treat these final months in the city as a creative residency, making things that bring me joy.

I’ve had a long relationship with sewing. When I was a teenager, I dreamed of becoming a fashion designer (though I eventually chose to study animation instead). I got my first sewing machine at 14. I used to follow a YouTube channel called Threadbangers—they upcycled thrift finds and took on all sorts of creative projects. They were a big inspiration, and lately, I feel like I’m finally living that kind of creative life.

I took a beginner Sewing 101 class in June, and it was great. Since I was self-taught, the small tips they shared, like tension settings and how to work with different fabrics. It has been incredibly helpful.

So far, I’ve made two shirt-and-shorts matching sets, altered seven t-shirts, and added pockets to two pairs of pants.
